Abstract
To investigate effects of methionine and ethephon on the yellow color development and the quality of Satsuma orange, methionine or ethephon was sprayed alone or together with ascorbic acid, NAA, or 2, 4, 5-TP on Satsuma orange trees one month before harvest.
Methionine had no effect on color development, chlorophyll content, soluble solid and acid content, leaf and fruit abscission.
Ethephon at 500ppm level had significant effect on developing yellow color and reducing chlorophyll content, but no effect on soluble solid and acid content. Greatest color development occurred within 13 days following application. Fruit and leaf abscission were apparent with the ethephon treatment. Applying NAA and 2, 4, 5-TP with ethephon did not reduce the fruit and leaf drop. Applying ethephon at 250ppm level showed very little response when compared to the 500ppm level.
Application of ascorbic acid with ethephon 250ppm had an effect on color development when compared to same ethephon level alone, while its addition to ethephon 500ppm had no effect on color development.
From the results of this study, it is concluded that preharvest application of ethephon had significant effect on developing yellow color of Satsuma orange fruit, but soluble solid and acid contents were not simultaneously increased, resulting in an immature yellow orange fruit. Furthermore, defoliation induced by ethephon application seems to be unsatisfactory for the practical use.
